Handmade Valentine Gift (or just something for the holiday) Tutorial

(Yes, I'm posting for the 2nd time today! Tell me if it's annoying. )

Valentines Day is I think about 3 weeks away. (lol, yes along way away, but I really wanted to share this tutorial.) how about a little something to wear made by you to enjoy this day or to give to a sister! :)

I made this headband for my sister Lydia and thought I would do a tutorial for you all!

Here we go. :)

You'll need:

A hot glue gun

Some glue for it

A 1/2 yard of fabric (maybe less)

And 1/4 or even 1/8 of a yard of contrast fabric (or just scraps really)

Cut a strip of fabric twice the the width you want it to fit on your head and than an extra 1inch.!

Get a measuring tape and measure around your head where the headband will rest and add an extra 5-6 inches  (for hemming the ends and to tie it around your head)....

After you have cut it out and iron it until it is smooth, while its still smooth fold the edges towards the middle.
Only fold it about 1/4- 1/2 an inch in and then iron it down! Do this on both sides.

(sorry for the bad quality of this photo.)

And than after you iron it down like that take the head band and fold it over in the middle, like so:

                                      and Iron it down.

Next sew the edges down.

Make sure the edge (where you folded the headband in half ) matches up when you sew it!
Line it up the best you can and as your sewing it you can match it up perfectly or as close as perfect as you can get!

Than do the same to the other side ,so it doesn't look funny with only one side sewen!

Next your going to hem the edges of your head band.

This is fairly simple.

Trim your ends for any frayed edges or dangling string.
Than tuck the ends 'into' the headband.
Make sure nothing pops out and than sew close to the edge(but not to close) and than do the same to the other side!

Now lay the headband aside and Cut out a circle of contrast fabric,so it doesn't clash with the headbands color! I choose white.. Cut it with about 2inches from the end to the middle of the circle.
You could cut it on the fold and do a 1/2 circle with to inches from the top of the 1/2 circle to the end AKA fold.

Than cut out a heart with the same type of fabric you used for the headband! Not any bigger than the circle, but not really small! lol,I guess I should of made a pattern, took measurements or something huh?

And iron it,so it will be nice and smooth, cause you can't really iron it after you make the flower.

Okay, then you start sewing them, by setting how big you want your sitches on the sewing machine (a lot of people just do it by hand, but I personal like using the sewing machine.)  and sew the outline of your heart and circle.

Remember to double stich in the first stich (if your using a sewing machine go foreward one stich and then hurry and move back one stich then repeat 1 more time and than continue around the whole circle.)

(the stich dial.)

Sew about this close to the edge.
You can probably pass the sitches where you started in the beginning by like 3 sitches.
I didn't do that this time as shown in the photo above, but it does help a little.

Take the top thread and pull,so it gathers do this until it all is gather.
I like to push the gathers all the way around with my fingers. It will then be all gathered/scrunched up and make a yo-yo flower as it's called! :)
Don't pull to hard or jerk it cause your thread might snap!

Your heart should look like this. I forgot to take one of the circle, but it looks similar, just it's a circle. :)

Cut out a strip of fabric about 8inches long (don't worry if it's not straight.)
Use the same fabric you used for the circle yo-yo flower.

After that plug in a your hot glue gun ,so it can heat up!

Than your going to twist that strip of fabric and than coil it!

It should look like this when your done.
You can just fold the end of it under the coil.

Oh, you might want to just the thread on it ,but not to short. I glue the thread in the middle.

Then carefully,so not to burn your-self use the hot glue gun to glue your center (the coiled strip of fabric) on your heart.

It should look like this,( the stray thread you see is from the coil fabric strip. the edges of the fabric, cause you twisted.)
I think the thread give it a little Shabby Chic look! In my opinion anyway.

Than hot glue the heart to your circle flower.

Now take out your headband and put on the headband. Take your now doubled flower find where and how you want your double flower at and how to position it etc... and then hot glue the flower in place.

And your done! :)

Ta Da
Enjoy your new headband!

(I accidentally used the flash on this photo!)

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!

Sorry, about the bad photo quality in some of the photos.
